Bernard Stamm and Jean Le Cam: winners of the Barcelona World Race

On Wednesday at 6.50pm, with a 10 to 15 knot south/south-eastern breeze, Bernard Stamm and Jean Le Cam crossed the finish line of the 3rd edition of the Barcelona World Race - the dual skipper round-the-world race that started and ended in the Catalan capital. The two Cheminées Poujoulat co-skippers, leaders of the fleet since 17 January, won first prize after completing the 23,321 nautical mile loop in 84 days, 5 hours, 50 minutes and 25 seconds, thus establishing a new record time. The Franco-Swiss duo successfully avoided all the traps expected during this type of race, and managed to limit and repair any mishaps on-board as best they could after their break in the southern Atlantic, en route to the Cape of Good Hope. In the end, their lead over their main competitors was considerable. Evidence of this is that Neutrogena and GAES Centros Auditivos are only expected in Barcelona between 30 March and 2 April. Hats off to our skippers!

Bernard Stamm's first comments:

"I'm happy, so incredibly happy! It's all over. There are so many things going on in my mind. When you cross the finish line of a round-the-world race after spending almost three months at sea, it's always strange to see people everywhere around us. It gets us back into the swing of things straight away, it's great. Last year got a little complicated for me, so winning this Barcelona World Race was a fantastic reward. All our hard work paid off and it feels great. I'm delighted to be able to share this moment with Jean. This victory was not an easy one, far from it. It was full-on racing for the first half of the journey and the competition became less fierce later on, but we always managed to keep a fast pace, striving to keep as much distance between our boat and the others behind us. Might as well do things properly! The most important thing was to be careful with our equipment. When sailing, even though we knew we were well in the lead, the race wasn't over until the finish line had been crossed... Jean and I began this adventure with the same goal in mind: to climb onto the highest step of the podium. We therefore spent most of our time handling our boat as best as possible. We were entirely focused on performance, and were able to keep spirits high while doing so! We were lucky that everything worked out for the best, it's great. Every day, we sailed as if we had a competitor right next to us. As we weren't really contact sailing, the only difference was that our manoeuvres were completed a little more serenely, that's all. It was amazing. Truly amazing!"
