You can always count on wood heating
Yes, wood heating is a choice for the future!
Hyper competitive, ever more efficient and more environmentally friendly, essential to French energy independence and balance, widely established with nearly 8 million households equipped, low-carbon energy available throughout France, contributing to sustainable forest management, directly or indirectly employing more than 35,000 people in France, and the country's leading source of renewable energy, wood energy is quite simply in-con-stant.
It's a shame to see him once again the subject of false rumors. Because no, wood heating will not be banned in 2027.
- No ban in view for wood heating!
- But then, why is this new false rumor circulating? Very recently, the EcoDesign standard, the European standard aimed at regulating the energy efficiency and pollutant emissions of future wood-burning appliances, was revised with higher levels of requirements.
Requirements such as these would have made it difficult for appliance manufacturers to adapt by 2027, making it almost impossible to install new appliances starting 2027.
It is from this distorted and misinterpreted information that the erroneous shortcuts and false rumors of bans were born.
However, that is not the case. Considered "unrealistic" and "unattainable" by many industry stakeholders and numerous member countries of the European Union, this version was immediately suspended for re-evaluation.
- Do you already have a wood-burning appliance? Don't worry!
- The next EcoDesign standard currently under discussion will only apply to new appliances, not those already installed. No existing appliances that comply with the standards will be banned. Once again, the goal is to move the entire industry toward higher standards.
The more recent and efficient wood-burning heating systems the fleet of appliances contains, the better its energy and environmental performance will be.
This also requires good installation, good usage habits (choosing quality fuel) and regular maintenance:
- What is this "EcoDesign standard" in question?
- The first European EcoDesign directive dates back to 2004. Since then, several versions of the standard have accompanied the evolution of the sector and the development of innovations to move towards more energy-efficient, more environmentally friendly, and generally more virtuous systems.

This standard, like other markings or labels, gives consumers concrete keys to compare and help distinguish the most sustainable and responsible solutions, and therefore, make better choices. It's a virtuous circle for the entire market, and consumers are an integral part of it.
The opinion of Cheminées Poujoulat
In every field, norms and standards are subject to change; nothing is ever fixed. Updating and strengthening them is a natural course of action, provided they don't become a bottleneck. Reconciling performance objectives (energy, environmental, etc.) with manufacturers' technical, technological, and economic capabilities will be the key challenge of this future EcoDesign standard, currently under review.
The false start of the 2027 version of the EcoDesign standard proves something else. It shows that wood heating is an important part of the European energy landscape and that expectations for it are extremely high, even in the near future.
So yes, the sector has progressed at breakneck speed in recent years, it continues to improve, but let's give it the time it needs to grow properly.
The sector is fully mobilized, as it has been for many years.
